Participants and Days of Fishing
    In 2001, 774 thousand state residents and nonresidents 16 years old and older fished in Oklahoma. Of this total, 648 thousand anglers (84%) were state residents and 126 thousand anglers (16%) were nonresidents. Anglers fished a total of 12.7 million days in Oklahoma-an average of 16 days per angler. State residents fished 12.4 million days, 97 percent of all fishing days within Oklahoma compared to nonresidents who fished 345 thousand days -3 percent of all fishing days in the state.

There were 685 thousand Oklahomans 16 years old and older who fished in the United States in 2001. These anglers fished a total on 13.2 million days.  Approximately 648 thousand resident anglers (95%) fishing in Oklahoma. They spent 12.4 million days, 94 percent of their total fishing days, fishing in their resident state.

Some State residents fished in other states as well as in Oklahoma. In 2001, 122 thousand anglers fished in other states-18 percent of the resident angler total. They fished 832 thousand days as nonresidents, representing 6 percent of all days fished by Oklahoma Residents.

Fishing Expenditures in Oklahoma

Anglers 16 years old and older spent $476 million on fishing expenses in Oklahoma in 2001. Trip-related expenditures including food and lodging, transportation and other expenses totaled $212 million-45 percent of all their fishing expenditures. They spent $84 million on food and lodging and $58 million on transportation. Other trip expenses such as equipment rental, bait and cooking fuel totaled $70 million. Each angler spent an average of $274 on trip-related costs during 2001.

Anglers spent $250 million on equipment in Oklahoma in 2001, 53 percent of all fishing expenditures. Fishing equipment (rods, reels, line, etc.) totaled nearly $68 million-27 percent of the equipment total.  Auxiliary equipment expenditures (tents, special fishing clothes, etc.) and special equipment expenditures (boats, pickups, etc.) amounted to $183 million, 73 percent of the equipment are items that were purchased for fishing, but could be used in activities other than fishing.

The purchase of other items such as magazines, membership dues, licenses, permits, stamps and land leasing and ownership amounted to $14 million-3percent of all fishing expenditures.
