Description:

Fondly known as Chicken Hawks and Hoot Owls, many raptors (birds that hunt and eat other animals) spend their winters in Oklahoma where the ground is not covered in snow for long periods of time. Management on the Hackberry Flat Wildlife Management Area includes encouraging annual sunflower for dove and quail but rodents also enjoy the seeds. Lots of rodents equals lots of hawks, falcons, and owls. The program includes some classroom time where identification tips are shared before boarding the open-air trailer to go searching for chicken hawks and hoot owls. Wool blankets and binoculars are provided. Participants should be prepared for the ride by wearing a jacket or layers of clothing, a hat and gloves. And, as always, participants at any of the Saturday Morning Programs are exempt from requiring a current hunting/fishing license or Wildlife Conservation Passport while at Hackberry Flat that day. There is no fee but reservations are required. Due to the length of the program, children must be at least 8 years old.
