Lake Texoma Winter
Striped Bass Gill Netting Survey Results for 2007

In February 2007, fisheries personnel with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department conducted a winter striped bass gill netting survey on Lake Texoma.  This survey has been conducted yearly since 1993.  A total of 674 stripers were collected from 30 sampling locations ranging from the upper Washita River Arm to the dam, then west to the upper Red River Arm.  These surveys allow fisheries biologists to see long-term trends in striped bass population levels as well as size structure changes.

The OK/TX February gill netting graph (Figure 1) indicates overall abundance of striped bass continues to be very good with total numbers slightly lower than levels observed in 2006, but still ranking fourth in the past 15 year trend.  Abundance of 20 inch and larger stripers in 2007 were very similar to 2006 levels.

The 2006/2007 winter netting population structure and abundance graph (Figure 2) indicates that good numbers of small fish (7-10 inch) from the 2006 year class were collected; fewer 11-13 inch fish will be caught this fishing season following poor reproductive success in 2005.  Excellent numbers of stripers 16-19 inches and good numbers of 20 inch and larger fish will be available for anglers.  As these fish continue to grow, there should be excellent numbers of 20-22 inch stripers in 2008 for anglers to enjoy.  However, there should be fewer 16-19 inch fish caught in 2008.

What does this mean?  It should be another banner striped bass fishing season in 2007 barring unforeseen problems.  Lake Texoma should have a “Code Red” summer, which refers to a fish locator that turns solid red as fish are schooled up in a shad feeding frenzy below the boat.  This means anglers should catch high numbers of healthy 15-19 inch fish, with 20 inch fish representing two out of every ten fish caught.  Anglers should also have ample opportunity to catch numerous quality 4-10 lb. fish and some trophy fish as well to photograph and release or put on the wall of the den.

It is highly encouraged that everyone takes the necessary precautions to protect this tremendous resource and return the fish in good condition where they can survive and fight again.  Thanks go to the great support provided by the “six old geezers family” through the years.  With their generous donations, the southcentral region was able to purchase a new 24 ft. Blue Wave boat that provides ample space, safety and power to work Lake Texoma on good days and bad.
