Responsive Management
(Human Dimensions)

Successful management of Oklahoma’s natural resources would not be possible without input from the public.  Anglers, hunters, shooters, boaters, outdoor enthusiasts and all Oklahomans have a stake in the future of Oklahoma’s vast aquatic and terrestrial resources.

By definition, fisheries and wildlife management implies that resource decisions are made in order to achieve human goals.  Therefore, as the agency responsible for managing fisheries and wildlife for the good of the public, it is important that the Department accurately assesses the needs and desires of Oklahomans and set management goals appropriately.

In 1996, the Department began a new program entitled Responsive Management (or the human dimensions of fisheries and wildlife management).  The Responsive Management program relies on the sound principles of social science to accurately portray the range and magnitude of opinions and attitudes held by Oklahomans.  Statistically valid telephone and mail surveys of hunters, anglers, and Oklahoma households are often conducted to provide these valuable data.
