ODWC--Striped Bass Research

Striped Bass Research on the Arkansas River

Sixteen striped bass (Morone saxatilis) from the Arkansas River were tagged by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. Eight of these sixteen striped bass are located below Keystone Lake dam. The other eight fish are located below Zink Lake. The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation is conducting a research project on the Arkansas River using radio telemetry on these 16 striped bass. The purpose of this study is to understand the spawning migration patterns as well as year-round travel by these fish to understand which types of habitat and water conditions they prefer.

The proponents of Vision 2025 have decided to invest in a series of low-water dams that will alter the flow regime of the Arkansas River. The Arkansas River is home to a very valuable striped bass fishery for the state of Oklahoma. It is important that striped bass be able to maneuver up and downstream during their annual spring spawning migrations. This website allows users to view the data that has been collected on this striped bass research project hosted by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife. If you have any questions or concerns you may contact Brent Gordon, northeast regions fisheries biologist of the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation at (918) 299-2334.

How to use this site...

Links to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife study statement and a map of the study area of the Arkansas River are available through this web site. In addition, each of the 16 striped bass that were tagged has been given a tag number. On the left hand side of each page is a link to all sixteen fish. Once a link has been clicked the user can view a picture of the actual fish that was tagged, the date and time the fish was located at a specific site on the Arkansas River, and data about the weight and length of that fish.
