Under the direct supervision of the Legislative Liaison, is responsible for coordinating human dimensions research and surveys to foster citizen participation and public accountability in ODWC's fish and wildlife management programs. Participates in planning, organizing, and directing successful completion of assessments of stakeholder’s (constituents, citizens, licensees, employees, etc.) knowledge, opinions, attitudes and awareness of wildlife conservation issues including obtaining data regarding participation rates, economics, social issues and demographics. Collects data employing current human dimensions survey methodologies which may include focus groups, facilitating public meetings, database analysis, internet-based surveys, mail surveys, computer-assisted telephone interviews and in-person interviews. Provides specialized consultation and expert advice to staff on social science methods, results and management implications. Supervises temporary employees. Has extensive contact with a variety of public and private individuals and groups. Will require some travel with possible overnight stays.

Job Duties:

• Participates in planning, developing, budgeting, coordinating and implementing human dimensions research and surveys.
• Assists divisions in establishing human dimensions project goals and participates in the development of Department objectives.
• Assists in selecting, training and supervising temporary telephone and in-person interviewers, and data entry clerks. Reviews human dimensions research and survey data and assists in analysis, interpretation and presentation of information.
• Prepares reports, technical summaries, and popular articles in consultation with divisions/sections.
• Assists divisions/sections with contacting for professional polling or research services from universities or private firms.
• Facilitates, coordinates or participates in ODWC committees, task forces or projects as assigned for wildlife conservation and management planning.
• Represents ODWC on inter-agency committees (such as Technical Committee for the National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation).
• Monitors socio-economic and demographic trends in the state and nation and advises the Commission and Department staff on issues.
• May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Must have the ability to:

• Work extended hours and possible weekends.
• Lift and carry boxes of informational or survey materials, signs, audio-visual and photographic equipment.
• Must be able to operate a vehicle, standard/automatic, 2/4 wheel drive, including sedans, pickups and vans.
• Travel with possible overnight stays.
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and follow instructions.

Requirements:

Education:  

Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences, Public Administration, Recreation/Leisure Sciences, Political Science, Biological Sciences, or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university with strong course work in polling and/or social surveying procedures, resource planning, fisheries or wildlife ecology or management, statistics or other human dimensions related courses.  Please attach a copy of your transcript.

Previous experience is preferred, but not required.

Knowledge and Skills:  

Must be highly proficient in the use of computers and various software programs (e.g. Microsoft Suite, SPSS, ArcGIS, or related programs) and must possess understanding of relational databases (e.g. Access). Must have a comprehensive understanding of social scientific theory and methods. Must possess the ability to interpret, synthesize, and analyze data using social scientific or statistical techniques. Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
