Category 1 - Elk Hunts

A) SPECIAL NOTE~ Applicants should only apply if they have the physical ability to walk and climb in extremely rough and mountainous terrain and possibly in extreme winter weather. Expect rigorous exercise during hunts. It is highly recommended that hunters realistically assess their physical abilities before applying. Selected Wichita Mountains NWR elk applicants must attend a pre-hunt briefing at 10~00 a.m. on the day preceding their hunt at the refuge Visitor Center. Minimum age requirement is 18 years of age. Hunters have the responsibility to remove their harvested elk from the field and are strongly encouraged to bring a helper to assist with the removal of carcass from hunt area. Firearm requirements are centerfire only rifles of .270 caliber or larger. All handguns are prohibited. There is a five (5) shells per day limit.

 

Category 2 - Antelope Hunts
Can only be drawn once in a lifetime if drawn in 2002 or later. Minimum age requirements for Controlled Hunts is 14. One applicant only| NO GROUP APPLICATIONS. Up to three (3) hunt choices may be selected. These hunts occur on private property. The Wildlife Dept. does not maintain a record of available private lands. It is the responsibility of all successful applicants to contact landowners and obtain written permission prior to hunting on private lands and the hunter must have this written permission in possession while hunting. Private land access fees may be charged by the landowner.

Category 3 - Deer Hunts
Apply for up to five hunt choices for all deer hunts combined. Minimum age requirements for Controlled Hunts is 14, unless otherwise specified. Up to four hunters may apply together. Submit only one application for Category 3.

B) Hunters are required to attend a mandatory pre-hunt briefing at 11~00 a.m. on Friday at headquarters. Hunt begins after briefing and ends noon on Sunday.
C) Physically Challenged Archery Hunt - Applicants must have a permanent disability to the extent that they cannot use a conventional longbow (as certified by a physician licensed to practice in Oklahoma or bordering state), or a non-ambulatory or motor vehicle permit. A person who qualifies to use a crossbow shall have in his possession while in the field, and present at hunt check-in, written evidence of such certification. In addition, at McAlester AAP, selected applicants must report at 10 a.m. Thursday preceding their hunt to attend a pre-hunt briefing. Failure to attend this briefing will result in cancellation. Hunters younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Hunter may bring an assistant. Assistants will be allowed to transport hunters to and from the field and/or stands, but will not be allowed to hunt. Assistance will be provided for others as needed. Background checks will be conducted on all successful applicants and helpers prior to entry. Hunts may be canceled at any time. A $40 federal user fee is required to participate in the hunt.
D) Hunters are required to attend a mandatory pre-hunt briefing at 11 a.m. on the first day of the hunt at the Tishomingo NWR Refuge Headquarters. All handguns are prohibited at Tishomingo NWR.
E) Maximum of two (2) applicants per application.
F) Minimum age requirement is 18 years.
G) Hunters are required to attend a mandatory meeting at refuge headquarters on Friday. On Little River NWR, hunters are required to attend a mandatory meeting at refuge headquarters at 1 p.m. Friday, and hunting will begin following the briefing.
H) Selected applicants for deer archery hunts are required to report at 10 a.m. Thursday preceding their hunt to attend a pre-hunt briefing and check-in. Failure to attend briefing will result in cancellation. Hunts end at noon Sunday. Only traditional type bows (long bows or recurve bows) allowed. Minimum bow weight of 40 pounds, at 28 inches of draw. Bare bows, no attachments. COMPOUND BOWS AND CROSSBOWS ARE PROHIBITED. Hunters younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Background checks will be conducted on all successful applicants prior to entry. Hunts may be canceled at any time. A $40 federal user fee is required to participate in the hunt.
I) Other hunting seasons will be open on the WMA during this hunt period.
L) Sequoyah Resort Park hunters will be charged a $30 state park user fee, collected at check-in, in addition to the applicable permit and license fees. Hunt will end at 3~00 p.m. on Sunday.
M) One either-sex permit may be substituted for an antlerless-only permit for a limited number of applicants by random drawing at the hunt site on the day of the hunt.
N) Selected applicants must attend a pre-hunt briefing at 10 a.m. the day preceding their hunt at the Visitor Center. SPECIAL NOTE~ Applicants should be prepared for extremely rough terrain and expect rigorous exercise during hunts. Firearm requirements are the same as statewide deer gun season (centerfire only). All handguns are prohibited. There is a limit of five (5) shells per day.
O) Applicants must apply individually. No group applications.
Q) Hunters are required to attend a mandatory pre-hunt briefing at noon on the first day of the hunt at refuge headquarters. Hunt begins after briefing and ends a half-hour after sunset on the last day of the hunt.
R) Hunters younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
U) Hunt begins at noon Friday and ends at noon Sunday. No-shows will not be filled| permit holders only.
W) This is an extremely physically demanding hunt in rough terrain with dense brush.
Y) Hunters are required to attend a mandatory meeting at refuge headquarters on the first day of the hunt. On Salt Plains NWR and Sequoyah NWR, hunters with disabilities requiring special accommodations should only apply for Deer Hunts for Persons with Non-ambulatory or Motor Vehicle Permit (Category 4).
Z) Hunters are required to attend a mandatory pre-hunt briefing at 5~30 a.m. the first day of the hunt at refuge headquarters. Hunt begins after briefing and ends a half-hour after sunset on the second day.

 

Category 4 - Deer Hunts for People with a Non-ambulatory or Motor Vehicle Permit issued by ODWC
Only people who hold either a non-ambulatory permit or motor vehicle permit may apply for Category 4 either individually or with up to three additional hunters who possess one of these permits (except Salt Plains NWR, which is limited to one applicant only). Up to three (3) hunt choices may be selected. Applicants are limited to people possessing at least one of the following free permits prior to applying~ Non-ambulatory Permit - People who are unable to walk due to a single-leg or double-leg amputation, paralysis of lower extremity(ies) and/or disease or injury and who use a wheelchair as their primary source of mobility as certified by a medical doctor licensed to practice in Oklahoma or a bordering state may receive this permit. OR Motor Vehicle Permit - People having a permanent disability that confines them to a wheelchair or requires the use of crutches, a walker or other means of support or assistance for body mobility as certified by a medical doctor licensed to practice in Oklahoma or a bordering state may receive this permit. Applicants must list hunting license type, hunting license number and either a non-ambulatory or motor vehicle permit number when applying for Category 4. People with these permits may also apply with non-permittees for Category 3 hunts (except for Salt Plains NWR), in which case accommodations can be made through the area manager for successful applicants possessing one of these permits.

G) Hunters are required to attend a mandatory meeting at refuge headquarters on Friday.
J) One applicant only. It is highly recommended hunters bring a non-hunting helper to assist in set up, deer cleaning, retrieval and check-in.
L) Sequoyah Resort Park hunters will be charged a $30 state park user fee, collected at check-in, in addition to applicable permit and license fees. Hunt will end at 3~00 p.m. on Sunday.
O) Applicants must apply individually. No group applications.
P) Two (2) deer limit. Two does, or one doe and one buck with minimum 15-inch antler spread. Hunt will begin at noon Friday and will end at noon Sunday.
T) Hunters are required to attend a mandatory pre-hunt briefing at 11 a.m. the first day of the hunt at refuge headquarters. All handguns are prohibited. Hunters with disabilities may use an all-terrain vehicle with an ODWC Non-ambulatory Permit.
Y) Hunters are required to attend a mandatory meeting at the refuge headquarters on the first day of the hunt. On Salt Plains NWR and Sequoyah NWR, hunters with disabilities requiring special accommodations should only apply for Deer Hunts for Persons with Non-ambulatory or Motor Vehicle Permit (Category 4).

 

Category 5 - Youth Deer Hunts
Hunters must be 15 or younger on the first day of the hunt and must have completed hunter education certification or hold an apprentice-designated license. Youth hunters who hold an apprentice-designated license must be accompanied by an adult non-hunting partner 18 years old or older who possesses a certificate of hunter education or is exempt from either hunter education requirements or license requirements (except on McAlester AAP, Salt Plains NWR, and USDA Grazinglands Research Lab, where hunters must be 12-15 years old). Proof of age and hunter education certification are required at check- in. One (1) applicant only| NO GROUP APPLICATIONS. Up to three hunt choices may be selected. Applicants must report to area headquarters at times specified below. Sequoyah Resort Park hunters will be charged a $30 state park user fee collected at the check-in in addition to applicable permit and license fees. All participants are required to be accompanied by an adult non-hunting partner. Non-hunting partner does not need a hunting license and should not apply for this category. All handguns are prohibited on Tishomingo NWR. McAlester AAP hunters will be charged a $40 Federal User Fee.

Category 6 - Spring Turkey Hunts
Minimum age requirements for Controlled Hunts is 14. Up to two hunters may apply together, except McAlester AAP applicants must apply in pairs. Up to three hunt choices may be selected.

G) Hunters are required to attend a mandatory meeting at refuge headquarters at 1 p.m. Friday, and hunting will begin after the briefing.
O) Applicants must apply individually| no group applications.
S) Restricted to federally approved nontoxic shot only.
U) Hunt will begin at noon Friday and will end at noon Sunday.
V) Must apply in pairs. Background checks will be conducted on all successful applicants prior to entry. Hunts may be canceled at any time. A $40 federal user fee is required to participate in the hunt. A mandatory briefing will be conducted at 8 a.m. Friday before each hunt.
X) Applicants must report to area headquarters at noon Friday at Deep Fork to attend a mandatory pre-hunt briefing.

 

Category 7 - Youth Spring Turkey Hunts
Hunters must be 15 or younger on the first day of the hunt and have completed their hunter education certification or hold an apprentice-designated license. Youth hunters who hold an apprentice-designated license must be accompanied by an adult non-hunting partner 18 years old or older who possesses a certificate of hunter education or is exempt from either hunter education requirements or license requirements. Proof of age and hunter education certification are required at check-in. One (1) applicant only| NO GROUP APPLICATIONS. All hunts end at noon on Sunday. Up to three hunt choices may be selected. All participants are required to be accompanied by an adult who is a non-hunting partner. Non-hunting partner does not need a hunting license and does not need to apply.
