Hackberry Flat Wildlife Management Area offers roosting and nectaring habitat for the Monarch Butterfly during the butterfly's fall migration. Evening activities begin at 6:30 pm at the Hackberry Flat Center. Visitors are transported to the roost area to watch the butterflies glide into western soapberry trees to roost overnight. Morning activities take place at the Hackberry Flat Center at 9 a.m. and include learning the "Monarch Basics" and then tagging and releasing the monarchs so that they can continue their journey south to Mexico. There is no fee and no reservations are required. Monarch migration can be affected by weather patterns (wind speeds, wind direction, weather fronts and storms) so number of monarchs observed and tagged can be limited. Please email Melynda Hickman in advance to receive up to date information about the status of the monarch migration at Hackberry Flat Wildlife Management Area.
Morning Tagging Activities: October 1, 2, 3, and 7 at 9 a.m.
