Category 3 - Deer Hunts

 

Apply for up to five (5) hunt choices for all deer hunts combined. Up to four (4) hunters may apply together. Submit only one (1) application for Category 3. Minimum age requirements for Controlled Hunts is 14, unless otherwise specified.

Applicants may apply using an apprentice-designated license. However, they must be hunter education certified prior to participating in the deer hunt OR they must apply in a group with an accompanying, licensed hunter 21 years old or older who possesses a certificate of hunter education or is exempt from either hunter education requirements or hunting license requirements.

C) Physically Challenged (phy. chal.) Archery Hunt - Applicants must have a permanent disability to the extent that they
cannot use a conventional longbow, as certified by a physician licensed to practice in Oklahoma or bordering state OR
a non-ambulatory or motor vehicle permit. A person who qualifies to use a crossbow shall have in their possession
while in the field, and present at hunt check-in, written evidence of such certification. In addition, at McAlester AAP,
selected applicants must report on the Thursday preceding their hunt to attend a pre-hunt briefing. Failure to attend this
briefing will result in cancellation. Hunters under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Hunter may bring
an assistant. Assistants will be allowed to transport hunters to and from the field and/or stands, but WILL NOT be
allowed to hunt. Assistance will be provided for others as needed. Background checks will be conducted on all
successful applicants and convicted felons will not be allowed. Hunts may be cancelled at any time. A $25 Federal
User Fee is required to participate in the hunt.
D) Hunters are required to attend a mandatory pre-hunt briefing at noon Dec. 10 at the Tishomingo NWR Refuge
Headquarters for the Muzzleloader hunt. All handguns are prohibited at the Tishomingo NWR.
E) Bag limit will be one (1) deer of either-sex, and one (1) either-sex turkey.
F) Minimum age requirement is 18 years of age.
G) Hunters are required to attend a mandatory meeting at Refuge Headquarters on Friday. On Salt Plains NWR, hunters
with disabilities requiring special accommodations should only apply for Deer Hunts for Motor Vehicle or Non
-ambulatory Permittees (Category 4).
H) Selected applicants for deer archery hunts are required to report on the Thursday preceding their hunt to attend a
pre-hunt briefing and check-in. Failure to attend briefing will result in cancellation. Hunts end at noon on Sunday. Only
traditional type bows (long bows or recurve bows) allowed. Minimum bow weight of 40 lbs., at 28 inches of draw. Bare
bows, no attachments. COMPOUND BOWS AND CROSSBOWS ARE PROHIBITED. Hunters under 18 years of age
must be accompanied by an adult. Background checks will be conducted on all successful applicants and convicted
felons will not be allowed. Hunts may be cancelled at any time. A $25 Federal User Fee is required to participate in the
hunt.
K) Two (2) deer limit. First deer -- Antlerless or spike only. Second deer -- Either-Sex.
N) Selected applicants must attend a pre-hunt briefing at 10:00 a.m. on the day preceding their hunt at the Visitor Center.
SPECIAL NOTE: Applicants should be prepared for extremely rough terrain and expect rigorous exercise during hunts.
Accommodations will be made for non-ambulatory hunters. Firearm requirements are the same as statewide deer gun
season, CENTERFIRE ONLY. All handguns are prohibited. There is a five (5) shells per day limit.
R) Hunters under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
W) This is an extremely physically demanding hunt in rough terrain with dense brush. Camping is allowed in the hunt area
for those who wish to do so.
U) Hunt begins at noon on Friday and ends at noon on Sunday.
Z) Hunters are required to attend a mandatory pre-hunt briefing on the first day of the hunt at 5:30 a.m. at Refuge
headquarters.  Hunt begins after briefing and ends 1/2 hour after sunset of second day.
