The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation has established an
Internship Program to help students that are majoring in wildlife related fields
to gain work experience. The Department has a limited number of internship
positions available. Positions are seasonal and vary by location and duration.
Internships are primarily in the spring and summer, with occasional fall positions. Locations are state-wide. Work schedules will be determined by the supervisor. Academic credit may be given, depending on the University’s policy and guidelines. Positions will be paid monthly in accordance with the Department’s hourly pay scale. Positions will be limited to 2 terms not to exceed 975 hours per term. (a term is a 12-month period starting with the hire date). A 3rd term may be worked only if the Intern is continuing their education. Verification must be submitted, if rehired for a 3rd term. Lodging is not provided. Intern applicants must be actively pursuing a degree, or have obtained a degree, in the following: College Major:
Graduate degree candidates, seniors, juniors and sophomores with majors in wildlife conservation and those with previous related work experience in fisheries or wildlife will receive preference. Applicants must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds for a distance of 100 yards, operate a motor vehicle, 2/4 wheel drive, standard or automatic transmission, with a trailer attached. Typing ability and experience with IBM compatible or Apple computers may be required. May be required to walk/run over rough terrain and swim. Applications are accepted year round. Internship Program $8.50 hr. - For college students majoring, or have obtained a degree, in wildlife conservation or closely related fields. Interns will work with a biologist or technician in regional management research projects throughout the state. Although a project headquarters is maintained, most positions will require considerable travel. Duties will vary among Divisions. Duties within Fish Division may include trapping and netting fish, electro-fishing, data compilation and computation, analyzing fish scales, otoliths, spines to determine age and growth of fish, chemical application, water analysis, conducting creel surveys or assisting with fishing clinics. Duties within Wildlife Division may include assisting with deer check stations, building fences, farm related activities, general maintenance of roads, buildings and grounds on the wildlife management areas. Duties within Information and Education may include coordination and supervision of statewide Hunter Education clinics and Aquatic Education clinics for youth and adults, public speaking engagements for schools or other interest groups, filing, maintenance, material distribution or data entry. The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation will continue to hire temporary positions in order to fulfill the needs of the public and the agency. These will be laborer positions that will be for a specified number of hours for specific duties needed, in order to complete a particular project. Biologist Aide (Seasonal or Temporary) $8.25 hr. - Same duties and responsibilities, but do not meet the education requirements, as listed under the Internship Program. Clerical/Data Entry $8.25 hr. - Most positions require typing ability and operating data-processing equipment. Located at various Department facilities in the State, including the Oklahoma City Office and the Fisheries Research Laboratory in Norman OK. Preference is given to those working on degree in Business or Clerical field of study. Work is available throughout the year. Temporary Telephone Interviewers $8.25 hr. - Conduct telephone interviews to determine the hunting and fishing harvest, activities, needs, desires and opinions of Oklahoma sportsmen. Interviews are conducted in January, February and March from the Department’s research lab in Norman, OK, during evening hours and on Saturday mornings for approximately 20 - 25 hours per week for 4 - 8 weeks. Must have the ability to follow written and oral instructions, understand fish and wildlife terminology and possess basic computer skills.
