There are many Landowner Assistance Programs, such as quail enhancement, deer management assistance and farm pond management, that the department provides to help landowners improve the habitat on their property for wildlife. Department personnel will schedule a visit with the landowner and assess the habitat needs of that piece of property. Since 95-97% of the state is privately owned, these programs are vital to the health of all species. For information on specific programs, call the Department at (405) 521-2739. Public outreach programs also are important to the Wildlife Department. Booths at  hunting and fishing shows and educator conferences allow agency personnel to meet with the public one on one and answer their questions. Department employees also meet with the public at public meetings and speaking engagements.

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation receives no general tax revenues from the state, with the lion’s share of it funding coming from the sale of fishing and hunting licenses. The agency still works for all of the citizens of Oklahoma, though. The next time you see a white-tailed deer, a bald eagle’s nest or a child’s smile after catching his or her first fish, you can thank the Wildlife Department and the many dedicated sportsmen and women pay to keep our outdoor heritage alive.

The agency coordinates many education programs to teach and inform the public about wise wildlife conservation, hunting safety and landscaping for wildlife, just to name a few. These education programs reach thousands of Oklahomans each year.
