ATTENTION Cimarron, Texas, Woodward, Major, and Woods County Hunters
Two CWD-positive cases were confirmed in recent months in Oklahoma: one in Texas County about 4 miles north of Optima Wildlife Management Area, and another about 15 miles east of Woodward.
ODWC’s response plan in cooperation with the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry is to contain CWD within areas where it is detected and to minimize its artificial spread to other areas by establishing selective surveillance areas (SSA).
Previously, ODWC was notified by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) of a road-killed deer infected with chronic wasting disease (CWD) found 2.5 miles south of the Oklahoma-Texas border near Felt, Okla., in southwestern Cimarron County.
Hunters who harvest deer or elk within the boundaries of an SSA must process those animals before leaving the SSA. The following items are the only exceptions:
- (A) Antlers detached from the skull plate, and antlers attached to a clean skull plate or cleaned skulls (all tissue removed)
- (B) Animal quarters containing no spinal materials, or meat with all parts of the spinal column removed
- (C) Cleaned teeth
- (D) Finished taxidermy products
- (E) Hides or tanned products
These rules have been put in place to mitigate the spread of high-risk materials outside of any SSA.
The Wildlife Department is providing freezers at voluntary testing sites for hunters to drop off deer heads for testing. Supplies such as sampling tags will be provided in the drop-off freezer.
Cimarron County SSA
A Selective Surveillance Area (SSA) now stretches from the Oklahoma-New Mexico line near Mexhoma eastward to Boise City, then southeast following U.S. 287 to the Oklahoma-Texas line near Kerrick, Texas. All land in Cimarron County south and west of those boundaries are included in the SSA. (see map/pdf above).

Beginning just east of Hardesty, the boundary follows Road AA (US-412) eastwards to what would be N 1150 Rd (if it existed at that location) and then North along it to where County Road 8 intersects US-64/OK-7. Thence, westward along the US Route (Panhandle St) towards Hooker, OK. At the intersection of US-54, the boundary bolts out to the northeast, then west along I Rd, south along N 0990 Rd, and east along E 0110 Rd (K Rd), to meet up with US-54 before continuing along it to the southwest (and completely encompassing the town of Hooker). The extended boundary follows along "NE Hwy 54" to the outskirts of Guymon, OK, and turns northward at Hurliman Rd, west upon County Road T, south by southeast along N Hwy 64, west along W 24th St, south along Buffalo Dr, west along Road West St, and south along N 0810 Rd, before finally rejoining US-54 on its way southeast (after having encompassed most of Guymon). The town of Goodwell is the next to be encompassed as the boundary juts to the north along N 0780 Rd (Monroe Ave), west at E 0280 Rd (Morris St), and south again along N 0760 Rd, before once again rejoining US-54. The boundary leaves US-54 just to the northeast of Texhoma, OK, where the level crossing of the railroad allows access to N 0700 Rd, which the CWD SSA boundary follows to the north, then west along E 0330 Rd (County Road EE), south again along N 0680 Rd, and finally turns east at or around Texas St. This is the southernmost boundary of the CWD SSA border, though it drifts slightly to the north as it passes through town. The boundary traces a path due east until it finds the road called Mile 47, which it follows northwards to a point just east of Hardesty, OK.

A Selective Surveillance Area (SSA) has been established and includes the area between 183 Hwy, E County Road 54, Hwy 281, EW-36, N2280 Rd, E County Road 30, E County Road 297, E County Road 295, E County Road 29, S County Road 2183, State Highway 50, E County Road 34, S County Road 209, State Highway 50B, County Road 210, and U.S. Route 412.
