Frogs are beginning to sound off across the state, signaling the beginning of the spring wildlife-watching season. To help nature enthusiasts identify the amphibians and reptiles that may be found in their backyards and nearby conservation areas, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation offers several resources, including "A Field Guide to Oklahoma's Amphibians and Reptiles" by Greg and Lynnette Sievert.
"This is a great field guide, custom-made for our state," said Jena Donnell, wildlife diversity information specialist for the Wildlife Department. "It features 135 species - 52 amphibians and 83 reptiles - that can be found within our state lines."
Each account gives tips for identification, maps the Oklahoma range of the species, and provides information about the animal's diet and preferred habitats.
This field guide is sold through the Wildlife Department's Outdoor Store for $25 and includes a one-year "Outdoor Oklahoma" magazine subscription.
